The story of David’s life is one of my favorites recorded in the Bible. David’s story begins in 1st Samuel 16 where Samuel comes to anoint one of Jesse’s sons to be the next king. Samuel approaches each of the sons and asks God if this one is the next king? God rejects each one.
Samuel asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
Jesse answers, “There is still the youngest BUT HE IS TENDING THE SHEEP.”
Later in the chapter, we read where Saul sent messengers to Jesse requesting David be sent to play the lyre for comfort. Saul’s request was “Send me your son David, WHO IS WITH THE SHEEP.”
In Chapter 17, we read the famous story of David and Goliath. In this chapter, it says that David went back and forth from Saul TO TEND HIS FATHER’S SHEEP at Bethlehem.
Isn’t it interesting that David was tending the sheep in three major recorded events in David’s story.
He was tending the sheep before his anointing.
He was tending the sheep before his calling to serve Saul.
He was tending the sheep before his battle with Goliath.
What does your “tending the sheep” look like? What are you doing while you wait for God to call you?
David was busy doing what he knew to do and God found him there. Don’t be discouraged if you are tending sheep and waiting for God. Do what you know to do. He knows where to find you.

On Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Jesus was resurrected, 10 days after He ascended, Holy Spirit descended during the Feast of Pentecost. The fledgling church was empowered to reach the world. Jesus told them, “Go to Jerusalem and wait. You will receive Power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you. And you will be My witnesses. To Jerusalem. Judea. Samaria. And the uttermost parts of the earth.” He also told them that the gospel of the Kingdom would be preached to all the world. Then the end would come. And those 120 disciples did their part.
